When countries fund climate action abroad, which principle should carry most weight in deciding their contributions?

A bridge built under colonial rule still serves the town. Its name honours an official whose abuses are well documented. What would you prefer?

Fictional colony: an essential household good is taxed by a government you cannot vote out. Peaceful petitions have failed. Would you openly break that tax rule and accept arrest?

Context

The historical prompt is Gandhi’s 1930 challenge to colonial salt laws. This is a personal hypothetical, not advice about a current law or a claim that all resistance followed one method.

Counterfactual: a voting reform would include some excluded women now, but leave others out. You cannot secure equal voting rights in the present vote. What would you do?

Context

Britain’s 1918 reform enfranchised some women; equal voting age terms followed in 1928. This fictional choice does not assume campaigners could foresee that timetable.

Counterfactual: you can support a charter that limits a king’s power but protects mainly a privileged minority. Rejecting it means no new protection now. Would you support it?

Context

Magna Carta in 1215 arose from a struggle between King John and barons. Universal democracy was not their goal. This simplifies the tension; it is not a choice everyone then had.

Ashoka’s own inscription expresses remorse after the conquest of Kalinga. How much should a ruler’s later remorse change how we judge the earlier conquest?

Context

Rock Edict XIII is a royal account from the third century BCE. It tells us what Ashoka chose to proclaim, not what every person affected by the conquest thought.
